Sights
St. Gallen has quite a few beautiful sights. The most famous sight is surely the Abbey of St Gall. Only a few steps away from our conference location Einstein you will find the baroque cathedral with the Abbey Library, which houses around 170’000 historic documents, in parts hand-written and over a thousand years old. The entire Abbey District was declared UNESCO world heritage site in 1983. Opening hours and the schedule for guided tours of the Abbey Library can be found on this website. - The current exhibition is surely worth a visit for everyone interested in the sky (who is not … ;-): “Stars – The Firmament in Manuscripts of the Abbey of St Gall”.
For other sights in and around St. Gallen check out the website of the local tourist agency. - A short list of our personal favourites after a long day full of scientific presentations:
Take a stroll through the old town or the Stadtpark.
Explore St. Gallen as the "city of stairs" (city with the most stairs in Switzerland). - It is worth enjoying the view of the city from one of the many hills ...
Have a swim at Drei Weieren on the flanks of one of the many hills (if you want to avoid the stairs, use the Mühleggbahn instead).
Visit the wildlife park Peter and Paul featuring the typical Alpine animals.
